     John Cabot was interested in finding the Indies by sailing west.  He decided that a northern route across the Atlantic would be more direct than Columbus's route.  In 1497 Cabot sailed with a crew of only 18 men across the Atlantic.  He claimed the land now called Newfoundland for England.  A second voyage was unsuccessful and Cabot and his men were lost at sea.
